Being a city dweller, I just love to escape into the country and enjoy the great outdoors. There's nothing better than sitting on the porch of my cottage at night and looking up at the millions of stars, listening to the sounds of the wildlife around me. And it's also great knowing that my septic tank is well maintained and that it is a safe and effective means of disposing of our household sewage. There are a few things you've got to remember when it comes to maintaining your septic system to ensure that it doesn't get overloaded, and as a result, the system will continue to keep working for many years.

The more water and waste you put into the system, the more chance it has of being overloaded, and this is something you really want to avoid, as the sludge could be pushed out into the drainfield and this is neither a pretty nor a cheap thing to clean up. To this end, never empty a spa pool in its entirety into the system. If you own bathtubs, be sure to empty them with significant in between so that too much water does not flood the tank. And try not to use more than two water appliances at the same time, for example, the clothes washing machine and the dishwasher.

It is a brilliant thing when living in the country, especially where you need reserved water, to have many water force saving devices in your home, which includes your all your water release systems. It will lessen the number of gallons of water used, which lessens the amount filling the septic tank. It is also a good idea to regularly check that your taps and toilet are not leaking. It may surprise you that a drip a second can result in thousands of gallons of water being leaked every month. This unneeded water will be added to your tank.

If you are renovating and adding more water appliances or fixtures, it is good to consult with your septic tank company to discuss whether your current tank and drain field will be able to cope with the extra demand. You may need to make your tank and field dimensions bigger which are helpful to know when you are figuring out the cost of your home upgrades.

It is imperative to verify that the tank check up company visits once a year. Many will offer a maintenance plan which works out cheaper if there is an emergency and you need to them to make an unscheduled visit. The more you do to keep your system in good working order, the more years it will keep working satisfactorily.
